What is the NOLA Ready Volunteer Corps?

The NOLA Ready Volunteer Corps (NRVC) is a community-driven initiative designed to harness the power of volunteers in support of disaster preparedness, response, and recovery efforts within the city of New Orleans. Managed by and anchored within the framework of New Orleans Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, the Volunteer Corps serves as a critical component of the city's resilience strategy, mobilizing a diverse pool of individuals to bolster community resilience and readiness in the face of emergencies.

At its core, the NOLA Ready Volunteer Corps is committed to fostering a culture of civic engagement and service, empowering residents to play an active role in safeguarding their neighborhoods and supporting their fellow community members during times of crisis. Through comprehensive training, strategic deployment, and ongoing support, volunteers are equipped with the necessary skills, knowledge, and resources to effectively contribute to disaster management efforts and enhance overall community resilience.

Ready to Train?

Welcome to the comprehensive training curriculum designed to prepare emergency and disaster volunteers for their crucial roles in all phases of disaster management: preparedness, mitigation, response, and recovery. This curriculum has been meticulously crafted to equip volunteers with the knowledge, skills, and resources necessary to effectively contribute to disaster resilience and recovery efforts in their communities. Recovery

Unlike Preparedness and Response, training for recovery emphasizes the process of rebuilding and restoring communities in the aftermath of a disaster. This involves understanding the long-term impacts of the disaster, assessing damage and needs, coordinating resources and services, and implementing strategies to facilitate recovery and resilience.

NOLA Ready Volunteer Corps works in partnership with our affiliates:

New Orleans Medical Reserve Corps

Within the NOLA Ready Volunteer Corps is the New Orleans Medical Reserve Corps (NOMRC), a specialized group of volunteers that assist in public health emergency preparedness and response efforts.

Activities include:

  • Community outreach
  • Vaccination clinics
  • First aid stations
  • Shelter staffing
  • Evacuation assistance

VIGOR EMS

The New Orleans EMS VIGOR program allows certified EMTs and Paramedics to ride along with EMS crews and respond to 911 calls for service.

  • Function as a third rider on an ambulance
  • Assist in supervised patient care
  • Support medical coverage for major events

Internship Opportunities

The New Orleans Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (NOHSEP) invites undergraduate and graduate students with interests in emergency management, hazard mitigation, disaster recovery, and resilience to apply for unpaid, semester-long or flexible internship positions. Interns will be paired with NOHSEP staff to work in the following fields:
