2020 Hazard Mitigation Plan

We’re planning for a resilient future.

In 2020, the City of New Orleans updated its Hazard Mitigation Plan. The Hazard Mitigation Plan details the risks faced by our city--both man made and naturally occurring--and outlines risk reduction strategies that can help lessen the impact of future disasters. The plan helps guide the City and its partners to  make our city more resilient.

The 2020 update was developed as a multi-jurisdictional plan together with the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans, New Orleans Redevelopment Authority, Housing Authority of New Orleans,  and Tulane University. By developing this joint plan, these entities will identify shared resilience goals, increase access to joint mitigation efforts and funding opportunities, and leverage resources to increase risk education and community outreach.

The Hazard Mitigation Office, housed in the New Orleans Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, led development of the plan and will oversee the plan implementation and maintenance process. The next plan update must be completed by October 2026.
