Tropical Threat Over, Rain Remains Possible

As Tropical Storm Barry moves over central Louisiana, the Tropical Storm Warning and the Storm Surge Warning for the New Orleans area have been cancelled. A Flash Flood Watch remains in effect until 7:00 p.m. tonight. Tropical bands with heavy rain could continue to affect the area, with predicted rainfall totals in the two to four inch range.

Barry's Threat to New Orleans Lessens, Key Floodgates to Reopen

Barry remains a tropical storm, however its threat to the New Orleans area has lessened. The National Weather Service now predicts widespread rainfall totals in the six-to-ten inch range, with locally higher amounts possible. A Flash Flood Watch remains in effect until 7 p.m. Sunday, June 14.

Mayor LaToya Cantrell today updated residents on response efforts as Tropical Storm Barry made landfall on Saturday morning.

The slow pace pushed the timing of expected impacts further into today, tonight and Sunday. While the storm surge risk on the Mississippi River has passed, the primary risk of heavy rain remains in New Orleans. Tropical rain bands with heavy rain that could lead to flooding are likely today through Sunday.

Forecast Crest of Mississippi River Lowered with Tropical Storm Barry

The National Weather Service (NWS) has revised the forecast crest of the Mississippi River in New Orleans in the coming days, lowering the projected river height for the area related to Tropical Storm Barry.

The river level at the Carrollton Gauge in New Orleans crested at 16.93 today (Friday, July 12), and has begun to fall. This means that the storm surge has passed and the risk of levee overtopping is minimal.
