City of New Orleans Responds to Hurricane Delta Impacts

Hurricane Delta made landfall around 6 p.m. Friday some 200 miles west of New Orleans as a Category 2 hurricane. Strong winds associated with Delta's outer bands, with gusts near 50 mph, caused minor power outages and downed tree limbs in the local area. A Wind Advisory remains in effect citywide until 1 p.m. today and a Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect for areas outside the levee system until 1 p.m. today. All other tropical warnings were cancelled at 4 a.m. this morning as Delta continues to move into north-central Louisiana.

Tropical Warnings Cancelled, Voluntary Evacuation Outside Levees Lifted

The National Hurricane Center has cancelled the Tropical Storm Warning and Storm Surge Warning for Orleans Parish as Delta continues to move into North-central Louisiana this morning. A Wind Advisory and Coastal Flood Advisory are in effect until 1 p.m. The threat from Hurricane Delta to the local area has passed.

The Voluntary Evacuation outside the levee system is no longer in effect. Parking restrictions on neutral grounds and sidewalks will go back into effect this evening at 6 p.m. Please remove vehicles by that time.

Garbage and Recycling Collection, Recycling Drop-Off Day will Proceed Saturday as Scheduled

Curbside garbage and recycling collections by the City of New Orleans from eligible properties will proceed as scheduled on Saturday, Oct. 10, 2020. Residents are reminded to place garbage or recycling in City-issued carts with the lids closed. If recycling bins are used, heavier items should be placed on top. Up to six securely tied bags of leaves and small branches and up to six bundles of branches cut in 4-foot lengths can be placed next to carts.

Stay Weather Aware in New Orleans

Residents and visitors should stay weather aware today and tonight in New Orleans, as impacts from Delta's bands are possible. Strong winds and tornadoes are possible. Be prepared to stay indoors should storms move through the area.

High Confidence in Western Track, NOLA Impacts Possible

With the Thursday 10 a.m. advisory, there is a high confidence in the forecast track for Hurricane Delta, which remains to the west of New Orleans. However, the storm is expected to widen, so local impacts are still possible. A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect as sustained winds between 39 to 73 miles per hour will be possible Friday and Saturday. A Storm Surge Warning is in effect for areas outside the levee system, where two to four feet of surge is possible.

The National Hurricane Center has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for our area, which means that tropical-storm-force winds (winds between 39 to 73 miles per hour) will be possible from Hurricane Delta. The most likely arrival time of winds is Friday morning.

SWBNO Monitoring Hurricane Delta, Provides Equipment Status Update

The Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans (SWBNO) is closely monitoring Hurricane Delta. Currently, 98 of 99 drainage pumps are available for service. One drainage pump at DPS 7 in Lakeview is now under repair. Crews are working to bring this pump back online by Friday, October 9, 2020

Sandbags available Wednesday, Oct. 7

In partnership with the New Orleans City Council, sandbags will be available at the following locations on Wednesday, Oct. 7 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.: 

  • Arthur Monday Center, 1111 Newton St.  
  • Dryades YMCA, 2220 Oretha Castle Haley Blvd. 
  • Milne Recreation Center, corner of Franklin and Filmore Avenues  
  • Maria Goretti Church, 7300 Crowder Blvd
  • Mid-City Library, 4140 Canal St
  • 8th District Fire Station, Desire St. at Law St.
