RTA prepares for Hurricane Zeta

In preparation for expected impacts of Hurricane Zeta, the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority will suspend all bus, streetcar, and ferry services beginning at noon on Wednesday, October 28th.

All transit operations will remain suspended until further notice and until it is deemed safe for service to resume.

NOLA Public Schools Announces Cancellation of In-Person Learning Ahead of Storm

NOLA Public Schools (NOLA-PS) will cancel all in-person learning tomorrow, Wednesday, October 28, in advance of Zeta. Schools will directly inform families of their individual plans for what programming may be offered remotely, due to the weather. Families should contact their schools for the latest information.

NOLA-PS central office will not be staffed after noon tomorrow, Wednesday, October 28th.

Hurricane and Storm Surge Warnings in effect for New Orleans

The National Weather Service has issued a Hurricane Warning and a Storm Surge Warning for the New Orleans area.

Hurricane-force winds are expected within the next 36 hours. Potential for winds 58 to 73 mph.

A Storm Surge Warning applies to the areas outside the levee system, where 4 to 6 feet of inundation is possible. A voluntary evacuation for this area will go into effect at 6 p.m. this evening.

Voluntary Evacuation Outside Levee System

The City of New Orleans is calling for a voluntary evacuation of areas outside the levee system, including Irish Bayou, Venetian Isles, and Lake Catherine, beginning at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27. Storm surge between 4 and 6 feet is forecast in this area due to Hurricane Zeta.

Sandbags Available Tuesday

In partnership with the City Council, the City of New Orleans will provide sandbags on Tuesday, October 27 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. (or until supplies last) at the following locations:  

  • Arthur Monday Center, 1111 Newton St. 
  • Dryades YMCA, 2220 Oretha Castle Haley Blvd. 
  • Saint Maria Goretti Church, 7300 Crowder Blvd. 
  • NOFD Engine 8, Desire and Law Sts.

The New Orleans Health Department encourages residents who may need extra help during a storm due to age, ability, or medical condition to sign up for the City's Special Needs Registry. Sign up for yourself or a loved one by going to specialneeds.nola.gov or calling 3-1-1 (504-688-2299).

City of New Orleans Monitoring Tropical Storm Zeta

The City of New Orleans is monitoring Tropical Storm Zeta, which has strengthened and is currently forecast to bring impacts along the northern gulf coast mid week. Specific impacts to the New Orleans area will depend on the exact track and intensity of this system, however, we are once again inside the forecast cone. Coastal flooding, heavy rainfall, and gusty winds are possible with this system. Heavy rain will be possible well ahead of landfall.
