Today, Mayor Mitch Landrieu provided an update on Tropical Storm Nate and declared a state of emergency for New Orleans. The Mayor advised residents to shelter in place on Saturday and Sunday in preparation for Nate and has not issued a mandatory evacuation at this time. 

Today, Mayor Mitch Landrieu, along with City Officials, provided an update on Tropical Storm Nate. Today, Nate was upgraded to a tropical storm and has taken a significant westward shift, making probable landfall in Southeast Louisiana over the weekend. The chance for tropical storm-force winds has increased. Heavy wind is currently the primary concern for New Orleans through the weekend.

The Recovery School District has reported the following schools will close early due to heavy rains:

• KIPP Morial Primary School to close at 2:00 p.m.
• Morris Jeff Community School to close at 2:30 p.m.
• Crescent Leadership Academy to close at 2:45 p.m.

• Collegiate Academies: Livingston High School to close at 4:30 p.m. with no after school activities

According to the National Weather Service, New Orleans is under flash flood warning until 3:15 p.m. today, October 2, 2017. Residents are advised to use caution around areas prone to significant street flooding such as streets under bridges and overpasses. 

Heavy rains are moving through New Orleans. A Flash Flood Warning is in effect until 3:15pm. Don't walk or drive through flooded areas. Call 911 to report street flooding and view reports of street flooding at streetwise.nola.gov.

The New Orleans Mosquito, Termite and Rodent Control Board (NOMTCB) is reporting the detection of West Nile virus (WNV) in additional mosquito collections in Orleans Parish. At this time, no locally-transmitted human cases of WNV or Zika virus have been reported in New Orleans. Residents should continue to remain vigilant by reducing standing water and taking precautions to prevent mosquito bites.

The Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans, in conjunction with the Louisiana Department of Health (LDH), has lifted the precautionary boil water advisory for the East bank of Orleans Parish. Bacteriological tests confirmed that water in the area is safe to drink and can be used for personal needs.

An Air Quality Alert has been issued for New Orleans until midnight tonight, Thursday, September 14th. The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) has raised the Air Quality Index to orange, indicating that the air quality in the afternoon is unhealthy for sensitive groups including active children and adults, the elderly and people with respiratory diseases, such as asthma. These groups should avoid prolonged outdoor activities and exertion.
